Where the numbers come from
Hockey boards use the NHL's own season and career stats, which go back to 1917-18, and team rosters from 1967-68, the year the league doubled from its Original Six. The WHA isn't included, and hits and blocked shots only count from 2005-06, when the league started recording them.
Some days are for goalies. About three hockey Exact Change boards in twenty ask for a goalie total (wins, saves, shutouts, goals against), and on those days only goalies can be typed in, so it pays to know the men in net as well as the scorers.
Teammate Chain links players through those rosters. With trades and long careers, a hockey chain's shortest route often runs through a veteran who wore several sweaters.
